What you should know about Fiordland House
Fiordland House is located on the shore of beautiful Lake Te Anau in Southern New Zealand. There are many options for you stay for only one night or more and Te Anau has much to offer the traveller including a browse through our small store which stocks a wide range of NZ Made knitwear and knitting yarns. Our staff are always happy to help you find that special something for you or for a gift to take home. We also have a wide knowledge of the local area including best sites to visit, tracks to walk and hands on conservation knowledge.
Ian and Claire Collie took over ownership in July 1987 and over the years the shop has been enlarged and the stock has moved to include a range of leisurewear products while still keeping the NZ Made products which now mostly involve possum and merino content. Keri has a varied background including office work in a variety of places from chartered accounting offices, a clothing manufacturing firm in Invercargill and a large insurance company whilst in England back in the early 1990’s. Most recently Keri has spent nearly 10 years working for the Department of Conservation here in Te Anau killing stoats, rats, cats and possums in Fiordland National Park. Ross has lived in Te Anau for more than 35 years and has now retired from the Department of Conservation where he worked for all of this time.
He spent a number of years as general conservation ranger working with endangered species along with pest control until he was tasked to lead the team in the building of the Kepler Track in 1985. Since then he has continued to lead the track and hut team to ensure the Fiordland tracks are kept to a standard that locals and tourists alike can enjoy. Ross has also been a Fiordland Port Lecturer on visiting cruise ships since 1989 and continues this work through the summer seasons. Recently Kaye and Peter Bloxham have joined the team with their NZ knitting yarns including a mixed range of Merino, Alpaca and Possum yarns.
They also run Farm Tours during the summer months at their rare breeds farm including alpaca, angora goats, gotland sheep. Most of these animals are people friendly and the emphasis is on interaction. They also have a selection of other animals including pigs, cattle and a horse.
