Stewart Island Lodge is owned and operated by Real Journeys a family owned tourism business that was founded in the 1950s by tourism and conservation pioneers Les and Olive Hutchins. Today the company still remains true to its founders and their guiding principles of conservation and hospitality. With operations from Stewart Island to Queenstown including world renowned cruises through Milford and Doubtful Sounds Real Journeys is widely regarded as a leader in the New Zealand tourism industry and is regularly named as one of New Zealand’s highest achieving tourism companies. Maori visited seasonally, attracted by the delicious titi the chick of the sooty shearwater.
Captain Cook was the first European to sight the Island in 1770, but thought it to be a part of the South Island so named it South Cape. In the 1800’s Europeans arrived to exploit the booming seal and whale industries. Ulva Island is also a protected habitat for some of New Zealand’s rarest plant species. Concerted conservation efforts by the Islanders and New Zealand’s Department of Conservation keep predator numbers down and support threatened species.
Lying just 30km south of the south island just a 1hr ferry ride away , most of its land mass is protected within Rakiura National Park, making it a haven for native flora and fauna. Densely forested hills descend directly to a coastline of rocky outcrops and deserted golden beaches

Visit Lee Bay, Horseshoe Bay and see views from Observation Rock of ravishing Paterson Inlet.
In 2007, the owners of Stewart Island Lodge, Authentic Journeys won the Department of Conservation NZ industry award of Conservation in Action. Lisa did an amazing job of making us feel so welcome and backed that up with great advice on what to see and do while we were on the island. Conservation initiatives are an integral segment of our overall strategic plan and day to day operations. From the pick up at the ferry to the breakfast and send off, the staff were very hot and helpful.
Breakfast is continental with fruit, cereal, yogurts and a variety of desirable breads andBagels. Genuine Journeys provides sponsorship for the Department of Conservation’s South land Conservancy Conservation Awards and for Environment South land’s Conservation Awards. Cruise at dusk to Small Glory Bay for an opportunity to encounter wild southern brown kiwi birds in their natural habitat
