Captain Cook was the first European to sight the Island in 1770, but thought it to be a part of the South Island so named it South Cape. In the 1800’s Europeans arrived to exploit the booming seal and whale industries. Ulva Island is also a protected habitat for some of New Zealand’s rarest plant species. Concerted conservation efforts by the Islanders and New Zealand’s Department of Conservation keep predator numbers down and support threatened species.
Lying just 30km south of the south island just a 1hr ferry ride away , most of its land mass is protected within Rakiura National Park, making it a haven for native flora and fauna. Densely forested hills descend directly to a coastline of rocky outcrops and deserted golden beaches

In 2007, the owners of Stewart Island Lodge, Authentic Journeys won the Department of Conservation NZ industry award of Conservation in Action. Lisa did an amazing job of making us feel so welcome and backed that up with great advice on what to see and do while we were on the island. Conservation initiatives are an integral segment of our overall strategic plan and day to day operations. From the pick up at the ferry to the breakfast and send off, the staff were very hot and helpful.

Cruise at dusk to Small Glory Bay for an opportunity to encounter wild southern brown kiwi birds in their natural habitat
